The thieves left with more than 300 grams of gold. A grave belonging to a family of travelers was looted in the cemetery of Renaison (Loire), where gold jewelry from the bodies of two deceased people was stolen, the mayor of the town reported on Thursday.

“A regular visitor to the cemetery discovered this morning that a tombstone weighing several hundred kilos had been moved during the night,” declared Laurent Beluze, the councilor of this town in the agglomeration of Roanne. “Two coffins were broken and the jewelry worn by the deceased, representing more than 300 grams of gold according to the family who filed a complaint, was stolen,” added the elected official. “There were the jewels of heirlooms and of a lifetime, which they bought during their lifetime,” said a person from the family in the newspaper Le Progrès.

According to him, the family purchased two new beers on Thursday to transfer the remains and decided to seal the vault. Identification technicians from the gendarmerie in charge of the investigation went to the cemetery to carry out surveys on Thursday afternoon. “During 2019, several graves of this family of settled travelers, very well known in the Roanne region, were victims of desecration and attempted theft,” concluded Laurent Beluze.
