Hard blow for oyster farmers one week before Christmas. The sale of oysters from the north of the Bay of Bourgneuf was banned on Friday by the prefect of the department, after around forty people were victims of collective food poisoning, reported on Saturday France Blue Loire Ocean.

The traders concerned were asked to withdraw the shellfish placed on the market from December 6, it is specified in a press release from the prefecture. Shellfish fishing has also been banned in an area which notably covers La Bernerie-en-Retz and Les Moutiers-en-Retz.

The oyster farmers affected by this decree demonstrated their discontent on Saturday morning by dumping oysters in front of the town halls of Pornic and Moutiers, said the Courrier du Pays de Retz. “We are going to start sorting again urgently. We will have to take everything in the ponds out to sea, the oysters, but also all the other shellfish are not marketable,” lamented a professional concerned to the newspaper.

A person hospitalized

Around forty people were victims of collective food poisoning last week. They had eaten oysters from Loire-Atlantique during a meal, organized on December 9 by the firefighters of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (Vendée).

Around forty of them, “including 20 firefighters, had a stomach ache,” a Sdis de Vendée official told France Bleu. One person experienced such severe pain that they had to undergo tests in hospital. The contamination of the oysters was noted after the opening of an investigation by the Vendée Regional Health Agency (ARS).
