Luxembourgish nationality is becoming increasingly attractive, with dual nationality attributions increasing by 13% compared to the previous year. This attractiveness increases, above all, among Brazilian citizens residing in their country of origin.

Due to the number of Brazilians residing in Brazil who now have a Luxembourgish passport, in 2023, more than half of the dual nationality assignments were granted to citizens not resident in Luxembourg, reveal Statec demographic data released on Thursday.

In total, 11,904 citizens became Luxembourgers in 2023, and, among these, 6,071 (51%) foreigners who gained dual nationality do not live in the Grand Duchy.

70% Brazilians

Among these non-residents, 4,264 citizens (70.2%) reside in Brazil and are now also Luxembourgers. This is an increase compared to 2022, both in number (3,228) and in percentage (62%).

It should also be noted that in that year, non-residents obtaining dual nationality did not yet reach the majority, standing at 49%. In 2023, they will exceed 50%.

Luxembourgish ancestors

Remember that it is due to a change in Luxembourg law, in 2017, that foreign citizens, such as Brazilians, were able to obtain Luxembourg nationality.

This measure resides in the option of obtaining nationality “by recovery”, based on Luxembourgish ancestry and allows a foreign citizen to become Luxembourgish if “he has a direct ascendant on his maternal or paternal side who held Luxembourgish nationality on 1 January 1990”, reports Guichet.lu. Or even if a descendant of these ancestral relatives has lost it.

Since then, the number of residents in Brazil with ancestors from the Grand Duchy who have been granted Luxembourg nationality has soared, at the same time that the Brazilian community in Luxembourg has grown at an accelerated pace. All of this was only interrupted by the years of the pandemic.

Grand Duchy. Luso-Luxembourgers lead

Among non-resident citizens, and after the Brazilians who lead the table, the foreigners who obtained the most dual nationality were 907 citizens in the USA (14.9%) and 371 in France (6.1%).

In the Grand Duchy, the Portuguese continue to be the most numerous in obtaining a Luxembourg passport. In 2023, 1,228 Portuguese became Portuguese-Luxembourgish, followed by the French (768 citizens, i.e. 13.2%) and the Belgians (341 citizens, i.e. 5.1%) in obtaining dual nationality.
