The prefecture of Charente-Maritime has published a decree prohibiting any “demonstration” and “crowd” in Saintes around the vocational school that Emmanuel Macron must visit this Thursday.

Prefect Nicolas Basselier motivated his decision in particular by the fear of “disturbing public order”, in the context of the protest against the pension reform and in view of calls for mobilization on social networks from “radical groups Charente-Maritime and neighboring departments”.

He also refers more specifically to threats from an individual saying on Facebook that he wanted to “bring a sniper rifle with ammunition” on the occasion of the visit of the President of the Republic, expected around 11:45 a.m. at the Bernard Palissy technological and vocational high school in Saintes. .

The rebellious MP Ségolène Amiot posted this prefectural decision on Twitter.

The order runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The unions had declared a call to demonstrate from 9 a.m. in front of the establishment, but did not go to the preparatory meeting with the prefecture on Wednesday, also indicates the prefect in his decree.

Despite the prefecture’s ban, demonstrators have already gathered with pans to welcome the President of the Republic.

Some even circumvented the security perimeter around the school by passing on railway tracks.

The electricity was also cut by the CGT in the vocational school as the arrival of the president approached, according to information from BFMTV and RTL. The Elysée would nevertheless have provided for a backup generator.

Asked about this decree this Thursday morning on RMC, Gérald Darmanin supported the decision of the prefect who “is there to guarantee security and public order”. The Minister of the Interior also recalled: “There are courts which sometimes find the prefects wrong. »

At the end of April, during Macron’s visit to a health establishment in Vendôme, the Loir-et-Cher prefecture had also banned gatherings. But this decree, which provided in particular “the ban on sound amplifying devices”, in reference to the pans drawn by certain demonstrators on the route of the president’s visits, had been suspended by the administrative court.
