Manabi, Through strategic alliances with private companies, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) socializes with small and medium-sized livestock producers, in the field, the stabilization of cattle adapted to the tropical environment.
Leopoldo Viteri, District Director of MAG Manabí, said that the purpose of genetic improvement is to optimize the fertility percentages of the herd, for characteristics of economic importance and crossing schemes that allow the production of meat and milk efficiently.
“An animal that is adapted to the environment – said Viteri – is an animal that can reproduce, a cow has to give one calf per year and it must be healthy, to be able to sell it at the best possible price.”
He added that Manabí is a province in which, due to its tropical climate, it is necessary to work with adapted animals with approaches to be able to apply regenerative livestock farming, which is a sustainable management model, which seeks to recover soil fertility.
This work – he said – is based on practices that optimize the relationship between the animal, the soil and the pastures, in addition to rational grazing, habitat restoration and prevention of soil erosion.
Miguel Mieles, livestock producer from the Olmedo canton, said he was pleased with the knowledge acquired in the theoretical-practical training, and considered that this will help them apply these new techniques on their livestock farms and improve profitability.
Manabí is the first cattle-producing province in the country, with a population of one million 004,600 heads, according to the latest foot-and-mouth disease vaccination record.
