(Web Desk) Her husband Majid Bashir, who allegedly tortured actress Nargis, obtained interim bail till November 18 to avoid arrest.
Punjab Police Inspector Majid Basheer has said that my wife is a responsible woman, quarrels happen in every house, some people are playing a role in this incident against whom I will take legal action.
Majid Basheer took a stand that Nargis is still married to me and this is our personal quarrel, there are quarrels between husband and wife in every house, those who are throwing mud on this incident or trying to take legal action against them. I will do the same and I will use every tactic that a respectable person does.
It should be noted that a case has been registered against Inspector Majid Bashir in the Defense C police station, which is being investigated and despite the registration of the case, the police could not arrest the accused.
On the other hand, the son of actress Nargis sent a request to the Canadian embassy about the violence against his mother, in which the accused has been demanded to be arrested. Ali Murtaza, son of the actress, sent the request to the Pakistani embassy from Toronto, Canada in which the position was taken that my mother Ghazala alias Nargis was allegedly tortured on her face and whole body by her husband.
Ali Murtaza demanded in the petition that the accused should be arrested and punished for his crime and my mother Ghazala Nargis should be given immediate protection.
IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has also been informed by the consular of the Canadian Embassy about the request sent by Nargis’s son. But the investigation is ongoing.
It should be noted that on November 1, former actress Ghazala Idris alias Nargis was allegedly assaulted by her husband in Lahore. The actress’s brother Khuram Idris Bhatti reported the incident to the police on the 15th. Later, Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Parvez Butt met Nargis and assured her of justice.
While registering a case against her husband Majid Bashir, Nargis has taken the position that her husband had asked her for property documents and money and wanted to bring a woman home, for which she was subjected to torture.
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Domestic Violence Expert
Time.news Editor (TNE): Thank you for joining us today. We’ve all been following the recent case involving actress Nargis and her husband, Majid Bashir, who has been accused of domestic violence. To provide some insights, we have with us Dr. Sarah Ali, a psychologist and expert in domestic violence issues. Dr. Ali, can you summarize the implications of such allegations within the context of domestic relationships?
Dr. Sarah Ali (DSA): Thank you for having me. The allegations against Majid Bashir are unfortunately representative of a troubling pattern in domestic relationships where abuse is often sidelined or justified by one party. His argument that “quarrels happen in every house” attempts to normalize and downplay serious issues. This not only hurting the victim, in this case, Nargis, but also serves to perpetuate a culture where abuse is tolerated.
TNE: Majid Bashir has claimed that this is a personal matter and has stated that he will take legal action against those who criticize him. How does this rhetoric affect the victim and others who may be in similar situations?
DSA: This kind of rhetoric can be incredibly damaging. It puts the blame back on the victim and suggests that speaking out about abuse is somehow wrong or inappropriate. For others in similar situations, it can create a chilling effect, where they might fear retaliation or further victimization if they choose to come forward. It undermines survivors’ experiences and creates an environment of silence around an issue that needs to be addressed openly.
TNE: In the context of domestic violence awareness, what steps do you think are vital for both victims and society to take in situations like this?
DSA: Education is critical. First, victims need to know that they are not alone, and there are resources available for support. Community programs that promote awareness can help educate the public about what constitutes healthy relationships versus abusive ones. Additionally, legal protections for victims must be enforced effectively. It’s also important for bystanders to speak up if they witness signs of abuse—it’s crucial that we as a society do not remain complicit.
TNE: Considering the legal implications illustrated by this case, how important do you believe it is for law enforcement to handle domestic violence cases sensitively and seriously?
DSA: It’s vital. Law enforcement must approach these situations with nuanced understanding and empathy. They should be trained to identify signs of domestic abuse beyond physical evidence and to respect the autonomy of victims while ensuring their safety. The legal system needs to offer protection and recourse for victims, not just for the accused. For justice to be served, a thorough investigation must be undertaken without bias.
TNE: Majid Bashir indicated that he plans to use every tactic a “respectable person” would use. How can we redefine what is considered “respectable” in the face of such serious allegations?
DSA: A respectable response to such allegations would mean taking accountability and showing support for those affected by violence. It’s not about tactics or legal maneuvering; it’s about understanding the gravity of the situation. Respectability should be defined by one’s behavior and attitude towards others, especially in acknowledging the pain of victims and striving for a culture of empathy rather than defensiveness.
TNE: what message would you like to convey to viewers and those listening about this case and similar instances of domestic violence?
DSA: I want to emphasize that domestic violence is a serious issue that affects lives, families, and communities. We all have a role to play in combating it—whether it’s through speaking out, supporting victims, or fostering a culture that condemns violence of any form. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please reach out for help; it’s essential to break the silence and seek support.
TNE: Thank you, Dr. Ali. Your insights are incredibly valuable, and we hope this discussion helps raise awareness about the critical issue of domestic violence.
