A new approach to securing investment in Manchester United has been unveiled by Finnish businessman Thomas Zilliacus, reigniting speculation surrounding the club’s ownership. The entrepreneur is prepared to invest once more, offering a revised strategy that includes potential collaboration with the current owners, the Glazer family.
Manchester United Ownership: A History of Bids
Zilliacus was previously among the contenders to purchase Manchester United in 2022, alongside Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, when the Glazer family considered selling all or part of the iconic football club. While his initial, supporter-driven proposal didn’t advance, he maintains it represented a significant financial opportunity.
The “Swedish Model” and Fan Ownership
At the heart of Zilliacus’s previous bid was a novel approach to ownership – a “Swedish model” designed to engage the club’s vast global fanbase. He disclosed that his team developed an application that would have allowed supporters to purchase a small ownership stake in Manchester United for approximately $400, granting them some influence over club operations.
This innovative scheme, which underwent testing, theoretically could have generated up to $20 billion if just 5% of his estimated one billion Manchester United supporters worldwide had participated. The concept aimed to tap into the immense economic power of the club’s passionate fanbase.
Willingness to Collaborate with the Glazers
Zilliacus’s current stance demonstrates a willingness to work alongside existing investors, including the Glazer family, amidst ongoing reports that the club is again available for purchase. He indicated a pragmatic approach, stating, “I would have no problem working with the Glazers. They could even hold a minority position where they could continue to enjoy a nice cash flow.”
He envisions a scenario where the club’s development is prioritized, ultimately restoring Manchester United to its position as the world’s premier football club, with satisfied fans and a thriving organization. “But at the same time, the club could be developed so that it becomes once again, the best club in the world. And the fans are happy and everybody’s happy. That’s the way I see it,” he explained.
Despite his revised proposal and openness to collaboration, Zilliacus believes the Glazer family is likely to sell their stake in Manchester United in the near future. However, he anticipates they will seek a price exceeding the club’s current valuation.
“I would think so,” he responded when asked about the Glazers’ potential departure from Old Trafford. “I mean, they have already made so much money out of the club.” He further noted the strained relationship between the Glazers and the fanbase, stating, “They have not gelled well with the fans. I don’t think people want to forever be involved with assets where they get a lot of negative feedback as owners, as the Glazers continue to do.”
The Value of Global Fan Engagement
Zilliacus emphasizes a dual perspective on the club’s worth: its current valuation and its potential for growth. He believes the key to unlocking that potential lies in engaging the club’s massive global fanbase.
“One is what is it worth today and the other is what it can become. What can it be worth with the right decisions made? The program that I have to engage the club to perhaps a billion fans around the world, that is where I see the real value,” he stated. He argues that the potential revenue generated from such a large and dedicated fanbase could justify a higher purchase price than current valuations suggest. “That value is very high, which means that you could actually justify a higher price than what the valuation is today, because of the potential that fan base holds.”
