For the first time in his career, Pep Guardiola has lost five matches in a row
in all competitions. This was the worst of the lot – a complete 0–4 home defeat to Tottenham. This was City’s third consecutive defeat in the league, and their first home defeat in over two years.
And next Sunday, City travels to Anfield.
– In eight years, we have never experienced this, says manager Pep Guardiola to BBC.
City created the most chances before halftime – Haaland had three opportunities he could have scored from – but Tottenham converted theirs into goals.
James Maddison scored both, first from a beautiful cross by Dejan Kulusevski and then after a major error by Josko Gvardiol.
– This is a special day, says Maddison to Sky Sports.
The home side dominated on their left flank and were overrun on their right.
– City had enough chances to score five goals. They are not holding together defensively at all, said former England keeper Paul Robinson on BBC radio.
Pep Guardiola made changes at halftime, bringing in Nathan Aké for John Stones.
– What is happening?! They are being outplayed all over the field. I have not seen them fall so short since Guardiola came to the club, reported Neville.
Haaland had a couple of good chances in the second half as well.
One hit the crossbar, another was saved by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
At the other end, Brennan Johnson sealed the humiliation at 4–0 just before the end.
– I am proud of the boys for the football we played and the discipline we showed. When you play against City, they test all aspects of your game, and we handled it well, says Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou to Sky Sports.
Home fans were simply shaken. This is something they have not experienced in a very long time. Three consecutive losses in the league now put them in real danger of being left behind in the title race.
Guardiola had never before lost four matches in a row in all competitions, and now the fifth came as well. He always says that you do not win titles at the start of the season, but you can lose them.
Tottenham took advantage of every opportunity they got and were deadly efficient, executing a perfect game plan from Ange Postecoglou’s men. Spurs have become a nightmare opponent for this City team.
A little over an hour later, he watched his teammates lose by four goals at home.
