Coach Amorim: “We need Maguire… “I need to develop as a leader”
Manchester United of the English Professional Football Premier League (EPL) continues to accompany central defender Harry Maguire.
On the 3rd (Korean time), Manchester United announced, “Coach Huben Amorim has extended Maguire’s contract by one year. “His contract was scheduled to expire this summer, but he will now accompany us until June 2026.”
He then introduced, “Maguire has played in 222 games since joining Manchester United, and won the English Carabao Cup (League Cup) in the 2022-2023 season and the English Football Association (FA) Cup in the 2023-2024 season.”
According to the club, Coach Amorim announced the news of Maguire’s contract extension at a press conference held ahead of the 20th round EPL away match against Liverpool in the 2024-2025 season at 1:30 a.m. on the 6th.
Coach Amorim said, “We will activate the (contract extension) option with Maguire,” and added, “I talked to him this morning about the need to improve his performance. “We need Maguire, he needs to develop as a leader.”
Asked if Maguire was a key player, he said: “I think Maguire handled the difficult moments very well. “We desperately need a leader, and Maguire needs to improve in that area.”
In 2019, Manchester United invested 87 million euros (about 131.9 billion won) to recruit Maguire, who was very active at Leicester City.
Maguire was trusted enough to lead Manchester United by wearing the captain’s armband immediately after joining the team.
However, they were criticized for not showing as strong a defense as they did in the past at Leicester City.
Maguire was expected to leave Manchester United at the end of this season due to ongoing transfer rumors.
However, he played 7 games under coach Amorim and performed like an altoran, and was able to continue with the team with an extension option.
