Mariana Kukusheva from the Union of Bread Producers stated that if the return of the 20 percent VAT rate for flour and bread is accepted in the 2025 budget, bread will become more expensive every ten days:
“Removing the zero VAT for bread and flour would lead to the emergence of a 50% gray sector, to a change in the price of bread every 10 days, to messing directly in the pockets of all of you,” reports BNR.
The Acting Minister of Agriculture and Food, Georgi Tahov, rejected such a scenario and reminded that proposals can be made within the framework of the budget procedure, but the final decision rests with the parliament:
“I have neither seen anywhere, nor read anywhere, nor have I touched anywhere a context in which these apocalyptic predictions would happen. I am convinced that it would not lead to anything like that. The budget framework is currently open. All can make their proposals. All this must go through a debate in the hall and finally the budget must be approved by the people’s representatives”.
