Director Priyadarshan says ‘Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea’ is not a complete historical film. He said that the film can be described as Priyadarshan’s Kunjalimarakkar and that the film is purely an entertainer. He was speaking to the media in connection with the release of Marakkar.
‘There are ambiguities in history itself. I am not a historian. I say this after consulting some historians and reading some books. What is said in one book is not said in another. He is equal to God in Arabian history. But in Portuguese and European history, they describe Marakare as the only pirate. There is a saying that the hunter is right as long as the lion can not speak. The winner is the one who writes history. There was a lot of ambiguity in that history.
‘Marakkar is not a complete historical film. This film is a work in my mind for ordinary people who come to the theater to watch movies. It can be said that Priyadarshan’s Kunjalimarakar. Cinematic Liberty, which combines some traces of obscure history, I have taken for this film as a director and writer. There is nothing in the film that insults or hurts anyone in any way. This movie is totally an entertainer. With that in mind, all audiences in Kerala should watch this movie.
There is no tension with the release. The day the movie ‘Chitram’ was released I had no fear. There was tension when superhit movies like ‘Kilukkam’ were released. The concern was how people would take this picture. ‘Marakkar’ is a film that will be released without any fear after ‘Chithram’. I have been following this film for two and a half years. Started in 2018. I was preparing for this movie a year before that. My five year wait will come true when this movie is released tomorrow.
There is such a thing as a board beyond the money that people expect the film to receive. The only entertainment here is movies. That is why audiences come to the theaters. That is the success of the movie ‘Kurup’. People came back. We are thankful for that movie. The film showed that the audience will return to the theaters, ”said Priyadarshan.
