Idukki: The first export of GI tagged Marayur jaggery from Marayur to Toronto, Canada took place under the aegis of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). At a ceremony held in Kochi, seaborne exports were virtually flagged off.

Sugarcane is exported by Nilamel Exports from Anchunadu Sugarcane Production and Marketing Group at Marayur. India’s High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma flag-off. Sanjay Kumar Verma explained the market potential for Indian products in Canada with its 2.3 million Indian diaspora.

He mentioned that India’s jaggery exports to Canada have increased significantly in the last few years, but India’s share of global imports of jaggery in Canada is negligible in comparison. He asked APEDA to increase this level through such initiatives. In 2021-22, jaggery from Kerala was mainly exported to countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and UK.
