Today, Friday, December 20, during the broadcast of Azucena Uresti’s program on Grupo Formula, Marcelo Ebrard spoke about 35 percent increase in taxes on ready-made goods and 15 percent to the import of textile goods; measure that will be implemented between now and April 22, 2026.
The Secretary of Economy rejected that this measure is a “wink” to the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trumpwho threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs to all products that cross the border between Mexico and the United States.

About the increase textile tariffs and other products that arrive in Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard explained that the measure is a strategy of the Government of Mexico to strengthen the national textile industry.
In that sense, he said that the decision is not a response to Donald Trump’s tariff threatsas he pointed out that these goods not only arrive from China but also from other countries:
“Not necessarily (it’s because of Trump), I don’t know if he’s going to register it like that, the origin of this is a Mexican strategy. “What is happening is that we are receiving merchandise not only from China, but from several countries, with prices that are too low.”

That said, he stated that the objective of this increase is address a loss of 70 thousand jobs; This is due to the export of goods that arrive in Mexico:
“There is an undue advantage for those who are exporting these merchandise and they are arriving in Mexico with very very low prices and the impact of that is causing us to lose 70 thousand jobs, that is the reason for this provision”

Given the increase in textile tariffs who enter Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard was directly questioned by Azucena Uresti about the role of companies that are dedicated to this field, such as Temu and Shein.
Without specifying the name of any companythe Secretary of Economy said that they are working in coordination with the Ministry of Finance to address this point.
“We are certainly going to tax these platforms, they already have a tax treatment, but we have to perfect what we are doing so that it is effective. There has already been a tax modification and there will be others, we are seeing many improper practices because they do not pay taxes, they evade them, we are going to attack that, it goes against the economy.”

For her part, today, December 20, the president Claudia Sheinbaum He also ruled out that the tax increase is a response to Donald Trump’s threats; explained that the topic is generalized and not focused and is part of Plan México, a project that will be presented in 2025:
“Today they take it as if I were going to China, it has nothing to do with it, no. “It has to do with the protection of the national industry, it is part of what we call Plan Mexico.”
