The High Court also observed that the new generation sees marriage as an evil that hinders the enjoyment of life. The controversial remarks of the High Court Division Bench comprising of Justices Muhammad Mustaq and Sophie Thomas came in the order rejecting the petition of the young man seeking divorce.
Known as God’s Own Country, Kerala was once famous for its strong family ties. But the current trend is to break marriage ties for weak and selfish affairs and extra-marital affairs. If divorcees and abandoned children become the majority of the population, it will affect the peace of the society and stunt the growth. The new generation sees marriage as an evil that prevents them from enjoying life without obligations.
The current thinking is that a wife is a perpetual worry. The consumer culture of use and throw away has also affected marital relationships. The order goes on to say that there is an increase in leave-in relationships that can be said goodbye to at any time. The reason given by the young man for divorce was that he could not bear the harassment from his wife. The young man approached the High Court after the Alappuzha Family Court rejected the demand.
