Julianne Moore He is at his best. And if not the best, then the most thuggish. The Academy has denied her a nomination this year for Secrets of a Scandal, but her karma has compensated her by starring in Almodvar’s new feature film and being the star of Mary & George. I bet that Moore had a great time filming this series. Created by DC Moore, Mary & George is also a delight for viewers.
In the hands of Moore & Moore (who, by the way, have no family ties), the story of Countess Mary Villiers is very unsolemn. That, in a series of times, is appreciated. Especially one that deals with Mary’s plan to place her son George (Nicholas Galitzine) in the bed of King James I. Because 17th century England was old but not stupid. Jaime (Tom Curran) is neither. Nor Mary. George a little bit yes, but that’s what his mother is for.
Mary & George, available in Spain on SkyShowtime, is related to another great series that is both ribald and intelligent: Harlots. The world that these series portray was sordid and unforgiving but also left room for fun palace intrigue. Or maybe that’s the idea I get after seeing these enjoyable and well-thought-out fictions. Who doesn’t like a lady from yesteryear saying evil things? Julianne Moore’s in Mary & George are funny and dirty. She doesn’t mess around when she wants something, whether it’s a husband to get by or a king as a son-in-law. I’m afraid that some of her most poignant expressions have been lost in the dubbing. Another reason to learn English: watch English series and enjoy them 100%.
Mary & George is bright at times and dark at others. He frequently alternates these two visions of life: from Mary’s dark birth and her opinions on the uselessness of having a second male child, we move on to the adventures of this one, now grown up, in a libertine France as only the France of a series that knows it is a series.
DC Moore doesn’t have much television experience, but he is very clear about what he wants to do with the first major production he directs. With Mary & George, Moore proves right those who 10 years ago considered him an emerging talent. The other Moore stopped being emerging in the 90s. Since then, Julianne is one of those stars that we don’t know if she says she knows everything or if she doesn’t care about everything.. Whether due to an accumulation of crazy projects or lack of awareness in choosing them, the most famous redhead in Hollywood is synonymous with quality, but also with shamelessness. Secrets of a Scandal is the most shameless film of last season. Mary & George is not far behind. It works as a period drama, as a satire and as a vehicle for brilliance for an actress who, since she knows she is indestructible, signs up for a bombing. In her own way, Mary & George bombards the cinema with cups. She is a worthy heir to Harlots or Crimson Petal, white flower. And it stars a star. What a star.
