The Minister of Health, Mónica García, has indicated that masks are one of the recommendations taken into consideration to face the next season of respiratory viruses and hopes “not to have to intervene” like last year because she is sure that all communities will respect them .

If the flu epidemic becomes more complicated this season during the autumn and winter, the use of masks is one of the measures envisaged, said the Minister of Health.

The details of the document on which the technicians are working with common action and prevention measures for respiratory viruses will be known on October 17, when the meeting of the Public Health Commission is scheduled to close it, explained García at the end of the Council. Interterritorial.

For now, as anticipated, the document they are preparing will include a series of indicators that will allow the epidemiological situation to be characterized based on the risk of transmission, severity, incidence rate and rate of hospitalization, admission to intensive care or mortality. ; On the basis of them, scenarios will be designed to which a series of recommendations will be linked to reduce the damage caused by infections.

Something that has already been done previously with covid-19, and which the Ministry has now promoted in a pioneering way with this year’s flu epidemic “so that we don’t get caught and don’t have to take measures” in the midst of the peak crisis as it is happened last year, when the health authorities ended up mandating masks in health centers amid a rising wave of flu cases.

In this sense, he recalled “the complications” involved in making this measure, which the Health Department considers “basic”, effective throughout the territory. “We believe we can act sooner and that is why we need this document,” he stressed.

“We hope that it will be realized because I believe that it is not possible to think that a document on which we have worked jointly will not be realized; We hope that we at the Ministry do not have to intervene”, concluded the minister when asked about the possibility that these recommendations become obligations in the event of failure to comply.

The intention is to prevent these situations and that “it should not be the Ministry of Health telling communities what to do” regarding the flu.

Mónica García aspired to be able to discuss the proposals of her technical teams from the different communities with the councilors this Friday; However, only Alejandro Vázquez from Castilla y León intervened to “underline that there will be a lot of heterogeneity” in the situations.

However, he wanted to insist on the fact that “the tools and measures we have against respiratory viruses are the measures we have: vaccination, hygiene measures, masks and containment measures. And that is what it is,” concluded the Minister of Health.
