Actor James McCaffrey, known for his role as Max Payne, has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with bone marrow cancer. The news was reported by TMZ, which stated that McCaffrey died on Sunday, December 17, surrounded by friends and family.

McCaffrey, who was trained at the Actor’s Studio, had a successful 35-year career in television and film. He is widely known for his portrayal of Max Payne in Remedy’s three-game series, as well as roles in other Remedy games such as Alan Wake and Control. Remedy, the game developer, issued a statement expressing their deep sadness at the loss of McCaffrey, describing him as a beloved friend and collaborator.

Kevin Dillon, who co-starred with McCaffrey in the HBO comedy series Entourage, took to Instagram to share his condolences, calling McCaffrey his best friend and stating that he will be greatly missed.

Sam Lake, a key figure at Remedy, also expressed his grief on Twitter, saying, “We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him. James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey. I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.”

Rockstar Games, the publisher of the Max Payne series, also paid tribute to McCaffrey, calling him “the inimitable and commanding presence who brought Max Payne to life.”

In addition to his work in the gaming industry, McCaffrey also had a successful career in TV and film, including a role in the series Rescue Me. He is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and his daughter Tiernan.

As news of McCaffrey’s passing spreads, friends, colleagues, and fans continue to mourn the loss of a talented actor and beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
