Yorkshire Couple Wins £1 Million Omaze Prize While Enjoying McDonald’s McFlurries
A West Yorkshire couple discovered they had won a life-altering £1 million prize from Omaze while grabbing a quick bite at a McDonald’s in York on December 2, 2025. Rob and Lisa Nicholson, initially dismissing the call as spam, are now planning for early retirement and a celebratory 23rd wedding anniversary.
From Spam Call to Seven-Figure Win
The unexpected windfall came during a shopping trip to York to visit their youngest son, Max, at university. Rob, 69, a design engineer, recounted nearly ignoring the call. “I didn’t answer the first couple of calls because we thought it was probably a spam caller trying to flog us something,” he said. After finally answering, he realized the call was from Omaze, prompting a hasty retreat from their McFlurrys. “I looked at my wife and said ‘I think we need to ditch the McFlurrys and get home now.’ So we left our McFlurrys in a hurry and headed straight back to the house to meet the Omaze team.”
The couple secured their win with a £15 ticket in the Omaze Monthly Millionaire Draw. The prize is tax-free, offering immediate financial relief and future security.
A Family’s Dreams Realized
The timing of the win couldn’t be better for the Nicholsons. Rob and his wife, Lisa, 54, an NHS admin worker, have faced recent challenges, including the loss of Lisa’s mother to leukemia and caring for her father. Their daughter, Charlotte, 31, works long hours to save for a house deposit.
“This is such a life-changing sum of money, it will really transform things for the whole family,” Rob explained. The couple plans to use the funds to support all three of their children – Charlotte, Lewis, 30, and Max – and provide them with a strong financial foundation. Notably, both of their sons are autistic, and the additional resources will significantly improve their quality of life.
“We’ll be able to help all three of the kids, it means the world to us that we’ll be able to give our children such a fantastic head start in life,” Rob stated.
Retirement Plans and a Touch of Luxury
While Rob enjoys his career, the win allows him to transition to a more relaxed schedule before ultimately retiring. “I love my job and I love the people I work with, so I’ll cut down my days for a while and then finally retire and pass the baton on,” he said. He also plans to pay off his sons’ university fees immediately.
The news sparked joyous reactions within the family. Charlotte reportedly burst into tears upon hearing the news, exclaiming, “I told you something good was going to happen to you, you deserve it so much.”
Despite their newfound wealth, the Nicholsons remain grounded. Lisa, demonstrating her practical nature, even purchased a second-class stamp the day after learning of their win. However, they also plan to indulge in some well-deserved treats. “My wife has already said it’s time for us to have some time together, enjoy life and treat ourselves,” Rob shared, adding that his wife has been eyeing a special handbag.
Omaze’s Charitable Impact
Beyond transforming the Nicholsons’ lives, Omaze contributes to vital charitable causes. The company has raised over £100 million for UK charity partners since its launch in 2020 through its prize draws.
James Oakes, President of Omaze, expressed delight at the couple’s win, stating, “We’re all delighted that Rob and Lisa have become our latest Monthly Millionaire winners. It’s wonderful to see such a hard-working couple enjoying this life-changing moment, everyone at Omaze is thrilled for them and their family’s future.”
