On the morning of October 9, 2024, the Sangmélima Reference Hospital was the scene of a real race against time. Faced with a massive influx of injured people following a serious road accident, the medical team demonstrated exemplary professionalism, saving lives in extreme conditions.
It was barely 7:30 a.m. when the alert sounded in the corridors of the Sangmélima Reference Hospital. An accident of rare violence had just occurred in Kombe, just 15 km from the city. In a few minutes, the establishment was transformed into a veritable hive, each member of the staff knowing exactly what role to play in this medical ballet as improvised as it was crucial.
Imagine the scene: ambulances arriving at full speed, stretchers pushed hastily, white coats moving in all directions. In the midst of this apparent chaos, there is only one constant: the calm and determination of the medical staff.
Care worthy of the largest hospitals
Under the leadership of Professor NOAH NOAH Dominique, director of the hospital, the medical team has worked miracles. Ten patients, ten stories, ten medical challenges. From Ms. AKOA Christelle, who arrived unconscious with serious head trauma, to Mr. Nzouomou Pierre, 53, suffering from chest contusions, each case was treated with surgical precision.
But what really made the difference that day was the team’s ability to innovate in a hurry. Faced with complex cases like that of Mr. Atangana Charles, 44, with multiple maxillofacial fractures, doctors had to demonstrate life-saving creativity.
This responsiveness made it possible to stabilize all patients before their transfer to more specialized structures, such as the Yaoundé Central Hospital or the CURY for the most critical cases.
An example for all of Cameroon
The feat of the Sangmélima Reference Hospital should not remain an exception. It highlights the need to strengthen the capacities of our health structures, particularly in remote areas.
This day of October 9, 2024 will be remembered as an example of what Cameroon can achieve when competence, dedication and humanity combine. A lesson of hope in a country that needs it so much.
