Dr. El-Masri: Absolutely. The Green March was remarkable not just for its scale but also for its underlying values. It embodied a sense of communal belonging and mobilization. Participants rallied around shared ideals of piety and pacifism, which lent legitimacy to their cause. This was not just a territorial assertion; it was a movement infused with national pride.
Editor: That’s fascinating! Many people may not know that the planning leading up to the Green March was extensive. Could you elaborate on what went into making this event a reality?
Dr. El-Masri: Certainly. The preparation involved strategic planning on multiple fronts—logistical coordination, communication with participants, and building national consensus. Leaders emphasized peaceful solidarity among participants, fostering a sense of unity that helped ensure a largely calm and peaceful process, which was critical given the larger geopolitical tensions at that time.

Dr. El-Masri: The ethos of peace and respect was central. Many participants viewed the march as a moral obligation rather than an aggressive takeover. This perspective not only appealed to their patriotism but also garnered sympathy and understanding on an international level, ultimately contributing to its success. The collective sentiment was palpable—the shared strength of conviction created a powerful sense of legitimacy for the movement.
Editor: You mention “shared patriotism.” How did that concept manifest during the Green March, and what role did it play in unifying diverse groups?
Dr. El-Masri: Shared patriotism was integral to the Green March’s identity. It brought together people from various backgrounds—urban and rural, young and old. This unity fostered an inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt they had a stake in the nation’s future.
