The scientist who devoted his life to the Arctic celebrated his 70th birthday at the North Pole

On May 18, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Moscow in honor of the outstanding polar explorer, participant in the legendary drift of the North Pole-1 station, Hero of the Soviet Union, Academician Yevgeny Fedorov. The memorial sign is installed on the facade of house number 13 on Leninsky Prospekt, where the famous scientist lived from 1939 to 1973.

The daughter of the famous polar explorer during the grand opening of the memorial plaque said that when Fedorov participated in the heroic drift of the Papanins, he was only 28 years old. The polar explorer celebrated his 70th birthday at the North Pole.

The name of Yevgeny Fedorov is given to a group of islands in the Kara Sea, the Institute of Applied Geophysics in Moscow, one of the capital’s streets, a polar station at Cape Chelyuskin, and a research expedition vessel of Roshydromet. In honor of him, an award was established by the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring – Roshydromet.

The famous polar explorer devoted his entire life to science, made a huge contribution to the development of domestic geophysics and hydrometeorology, and the development of the Arctic. For participation in the unprecedented ice drift of the Papaninites in 1938, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and the degree of Doctor of Geographical Sciences. Then he was elected an honorary member of the All-Union Geographical Society.

Fedorov headed the Arctic Research Institute and the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR. Participated in the Great Patriotic War, which he graduated with the rank of lieutenant general. Under his leadership, new methods of weather observation and data processing were introduced into meteorology.

He stood at the origins of the Institute of Applied Geophysics, which he led for many years, took an active part in the development and implementation of the plan for the creation of the World Weather Watch. He was awarded six Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of Kutuzov 2nd degree, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, and many medals. Laureate of the Stalin (1946) and State (1969) Prizes of the USSR.

Members of his family and colleagues gathered to honor the memory of the outstanding scientist and polar explorer. The opening ceremony of the memorial plaque was attended by First Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society Ilya Gurov, Head of Roshydromet Igor Shumakov, Director of the E.K. Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics Andrei Repin, Executive Director of the Association of Polar Explorers Alexei Minkin, President of the Russian Hydrometeorological Society Alexander Bedritsky. The celebrations were accompanied by a guard of honor from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The participants of the ceremony were greeted by the daughter of Yevgeny Konstantinovich Irina Fedorova.

“For me, this is not just a solemn, memorable event, but a very personal one,” she said. – I was born in this house, and my family lived here for many happy years. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in this. Everything about my father is very important to me. We not only respected him for his merits, but loved him as a very kind, very reliable and intelligent person who always supported and always gave important advice. Dad was a romantic, a romantic of the North – they are also called “scorched by the Arctic.”

The daughter of the famous polar explorer recalled that Fedorov celebrated his 70th birthday at the North Pole.

– When dad was asked who owns the Arctic, he answered that it belongs to the one who most often goes there – Russian polar explorers, – added Irina Fedorova.
