The owners of the animals that are part of the circuses will be able to keep them, but not present them in public shows, indicated today the head of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), Guillermo Haro.
- DECENT TREATMENT OF ANIMALS
«Owners can keep animals without presenting them in public shows; They can present them on display. But we will ensure that this is done with the dignified and respectful treatment that the permanence of the specimens requires,” Haro said at a press conference.
- SALE OF ANIMALS
The official said that even the owners can sell them or move them abroad, but all under the General Law of Ecological Balance and the General Law of Wildlife, whose modifications that prohibit the presentation of animals in circus shows came into force today.
- FIGURES
The attorney explained that Profepa had an initial registry of 199 circuses, and in the last year 75 with 1,046 animals were inspected, of which 136 were seized because their legal origin had not been proven, due to lack of decent treatment and for lacking authorization to handle it.
- WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE REST OF THE ANIMALS?
Getting a tiger in Mexico City is currently within the reach of anyone with $2,000, following the effects of an environmental law against the use of wild animals in circuses, which has led the industry to auction off its animals for not be able to take care of them.
Pacchiano called on circus owners to provide a list of the animals that they “would not be willing to keep” so that both Profepa and Semarnat can “make a budget estimate” or see where they could move them.
