Michael Fassbender to Lead Netflix’s Kennedy Dynasty Drama
Netflix is moving forward with a sweeping new drama series, “Kennedy,” chronicling the lives of the iconic American family. The project, greenlit by the streaming giant, will star Michael Fassbender as Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., and promises an intimate look at the dynasty’s rise to power.
The series is based on Fredrik Logevall’s acclaimed biography, JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956. According to the official logline, “’Kennedy’ reveals the intimate lives, loves, rivalries and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history, and helped create the world we live in today.” The first season, consisting of eight episodes, will begin in the 1930s, charting the ascent of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including a young Jack Kennedy grappling with the expectations placed upon him.
News of the series was first reported two years ago, with initial reports suggesting Netflix envisioned it as an “American” version of The Crown. This ambition suggests a long-term commitment to exploring the Kennedy family saga across multiple seasons, potentially encompassing scandals, political maneuvering, and the presidency of John F. Kennedy.
“Fredrik Logevall’s stunning, nuanced biography pulls a veil on the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present moment, how we got here and where we’re going, as about the Kennedys themselves,” a senior official stated. The Kennedy family has been the subject of numerous adaptations and portrayals, a testament to their enduring impact on U.S. business, politics, and popular culture.
This role marks Fassbender’s second major foray into television, following his work on the Paramount+ series The Agency, which is currently preparing for a second season. While primarily known for his film roles in critically acclaimed movies such as Inglourious Basterds, the X-Men franchise, and 12 Years a Slave, Fassbender’s involvement lends significant prestige to the Netflix project.
Currently, there is no confirmed release date for “Kennedy.” However, casting announcements are anticipated, specifically regarding the actors who will portray Rose Kennedy and the Kennedy children. Thomas Vinterberg (Far from the Madding Crowd) is set to direct, with Sam Shaw serving as showrunner and executive producer. The series promises a deep dive into the complexities of a family that profoundly shaped the 20th century and continues to resonate today.
