A plant in northeastern France that makes tires for agricultural machinery and another in the center of the country that supplies civil engineering vehicles will close for several weeks, the company said, confirming a report in the Le Parisien newspaper.

The French company said its factories producing passenger car tires remain open even as demand falls, but it is in talks with unions “to seek solutions.”

The slowdown in activity is linked to a “general weakening of the world economy, especially in the automotive sector, where manufacturers’ sales fell by 20 to 25 percent,” CEO Florent Menegaux told the Parisien.

“Obviously, this impacts us and we are forced to adapt,” Menegaux said.

The group, which employs 132,300 people, announced a series of voluntary job cuts in 2021.

A factory in western France and another in southern Germany also closed in the past year.
