Miryang Showcases Cultural Renaissance with Festivals and University Partnership

The city recently concluded a run of highly successful events between the 17th and 20th, attracting both domestic and international visitors. These included the sixth annual Miryang National Heritage Night Tour, the Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Heritage Festival, and the ninth Miryang International Yoga Festival.
The 2025 Miryang National Heritage Night Tour, held from the 17th to the 19th, drew crowds to Yeongnamru and the Miryang River area. This year’s event coincided with the 30th Citizen’s Day and the Gyeongnam Intangible Heritage Festival, fostering a sense of community and celebrating the intersection of tradition and modernity. Key attractions included the ‘Eungcheon Arirang’ and ‘Eohwa Flower Fireworks’ displays, best viewed from specially constructed boat bridges and viewing stands. Performances included national and provincial designated intangible cultural heritage such as Gamnae crab rope pulling, Milyang Arirang, and Haman Hwacheon Nongak. The festival highlighted how these traditions are not relics of the past, but vibrant expressions of contemporary culture, particularly when staged against the backdrop of the national treasure, Yeongnamru. “It was a meaningful time when Gyeongsangnam-do’s precious intangible heritage shined brighter with its citizens,” Mayor Ahn Byeong-gu remarked, adding that “What is most Korean is the most global.”
Wellness Takes Center Stage with International Yoga Festival
From the 18th to the 19th, the 9th Miryang International Yoga Festival transformed the Sunshine Miryang Theme Park into a haven for wellness enthusiasts. Over 1,000 participants, including yoga experts from around the globe, attended the event, which focused on the theme of “Yoga that permeates daily life and sustainable wellness based on meditation.” Experts from India’s Vivekananda Yoga University, including President Nagendra and Vice President Manjunath, shared insights into the philosophy and practice of authentic Indian yoga. A Yoga Culture Concert, blending music, dance, and yoga, proved to be a highlight. Mayor Ahn Byeong-gu expressed his hope that “a healthy wellness culture centered on yoga will spread,” and pledged to support Miryang’s growth as “an international yoga-centered city through exchanges with India.”
Strategic Partnership with Pusan National University
On the 20th, Miryang City solidified its commitment to long-term development with the launch of the ‘Milyang City-Pusan National University Coexistence Development Joint Consultative Body’. The initiative, inaugurated at Pusan National University’s Miryang Campus, aims to address regional challenges and foster a practical cooperation system between the city and the university.
The joint consultative body, co-chaired by the Vice Mayor of Miryang City and the Vice President for External Strategy of Pusan National University, will be supported by an expanded expert committee of 27 members, divided into four divisions: education, research and industry-academic cooperation, regional development, and communication. Regular bimonthly meetings and ad-hoc sessions will ensure swift action on key issues. “This inauguration ceremony is the starting point for a new leap forward for the Miryang Campus and a pledge to grow together with the local community,” Mayor Ahn Byeong-gu stated, adding that the collaboration will result in “a practical win-win development plan that the local community will agree with.”
