Kazan: On Wednesday, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shook hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, the entire world was watching. This was the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders after 2019. This meeting came at a time when a new border agreement was agreed between the two countries just two days ago, which ensured that the situation would be restored to the previous situation along the Line of Actual Control in Galwan in Ladakh. A new warmth was visible in this meeting taking place after 5 years. At the same time, there was also a clear message for the western countries trying to corner India on the issue of Khalistani terrorism on the pretext of Canada.
India’s message to the West
During the bilateral meeting with Jinping, PM Modi said, ‘We are holding a formal meeting after 5 years. We believe that India-China relations are very important not only for our people but also for global peace, stability and progress. We welcome the consensus reached on the border issues that have arisen over the last 4 years. Maintaining peace and stability on the border should remain our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the basis of our relations.
Jinping told about global importance
Xi Jinping also underlined the global importance of the meeting in his remarks and said, ‘The people of our two countries and the international community are paying great attention to our meeting.’ Xi addressed India and China as ‘ancient civilizations, major developing countries and important members of the Global South’ and called for taking relations in the right direction. He said that it is important to handle our differences and disagreements properly for each other’s development.
The proximity of India and China will increase the tension of the West
The statements of both the leaders during the meeting are being seen as a clear message to the West. Malini Parthasarathy, former editor of ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, called it ‘the strongest message in global relations in recent years’. He wrote on Twitter, ‘In the important meeting of Modi-Xi, a clear message was given to the western countries, who are trying to harass India on the Khalistan terrorist issue. It was surprising that both of them emphasized the global importance of reducing tensions between India and China.
Parthasarathy further wrote, ‘China’s President Xi emphasized India’s new policy on giving priority to multipolarity and the need to build democracy in international relations. There is indeed an interesting global dynamic taking shape. It is a remarkable sight to see Russia’s Putin, China’s Xi and India’s Modi moving forward together in harmony.
