Mohanlal pays tribute to KJ Yesudas

Gana Gandharvan K. J. Today marks the 60th anniversary of Yesudas’ musical journey. Yesudas has recorded over 50,000 songs in various Indian languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Oriya, Bengali, Marathi, Arabic, English, Latin and Russian. He has received eight national awards for Best Playback Singer, including the Padma Shri (1975), the Padma Bhushan (2002) and the Padma Vibhushan (2017).

Actor Mohanlal pays homage to his beloved Dassett at the age of 60. Mohanlal recalls that Yesudas’ presence was a major influence on his film career as an actor during the 1980s and 1990s.

Mohanlal remembers the days when he recorded the first song for the movie ‘Kalpadukal’ at Bharani Studio in Madras. It was the song ‘Jatibhedam Matadvesham’. He was a fan of Dassette even before he got into film. Mohanlal says that he can be proud of Dassett’s singing in the movie ‘Preview’ where his face was first imprinted on celluloid. Mohanlal revived that memory by singing a song sung by MG Radhakrishnan to the lyrics of ONV.

Mohanlal remembers singing his favorite song from his debut film ‘Manjil Virinja Poovu’. Mohanlal also sang the lyrics “Mizhiyoram Nananjozhukum”.

Unni Menon sang the song sung by Mohanlal on the screen in the movie ‘Thenum Vayampum’. There were other beautiful songs in that movie. Yesudas’ song ‘Aarum Bhavagayakanakkum’.

Meanwhile, the Gandharva music was released by Mohanlal with the song ‘Ruhinte Karyam’ from the 1982 film ‘Enikum Oru Divasam’ produced and directed by Sreekumaran Thampi. Written by Sreekumaran Thampi and sung by Shyam, this song was the beginning of the Yesudas-Mohanlal collaboration on the silver screen. Later, in many films, they were received by the audience with their sound and form.
