More than 600,000 euros in donations were received after the tragic death trip at the Magdeburg Christmas market. More than 5,640 supporters contributed.
After the death trip from the Magdeburg Christmas market, more than 600,000 euros have been collected in the city’s donation account. A total of 5,640 donors have taken part in the campaign so far, the city announced around a week after the fatal attack.
Mayor Simone Borris (non-party) thanked all previous donors and said: “The willingness of the population to donate is impressive and a further sign of the great cohesion, broad support and sense of community that we are currently feeling in many places in Magdeburg.”
There are various fundraising campaigns. Borris also thanked everyone who followed the call for donations from numerous organizations, clubs, companies and private individuals and thus also supported those affected. Further donations are possible and welcome.
In order to secure support for the victims and relatives of the attack on December 20th as quickly as possible, the city and the Sparkasse Magdeburg set up the donation account. The mayor said that advice is currently being given as to how the money can be distributed to those affected in the most uncomplicated and legally secure manner possible.
Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen, who comes from Saudi Arabia, drove a car through the Christmas market on Friday last week. Five people were killed and up to 235 others were injured. The perpetrator is in custody.
Planning for a central memorial site and coming to terms with the circumstances of the attack will be central topics in the city administration over the next few weeks, said the mayor. Out of respect for the work of the public prosecutor’s office and the police, the city administration once again asks that the results of the investigation be awaited and that no pre-judgements be made, it said.
