Washington: More than 6,400 journalists have reportedly lost their jobs in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power. This is according to a survey conducted jointly by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA).

According to the survey, 231 media outlets were closed. About 60 percent of journalists and media workers are unable to work in Afghanistan. The news agency ANI reported that more than 80 percent of those who lost their jobs were women.

Of the 543 media outlets in Afghanistan, only 312 were operational by the end of November. This means that 43 per cent of the country’s media outlets have disappeared in three months, according to the RSF.

Until four months ago, there were at least 10 privately owned media outlets in most provinces of Afghanistan. But now there is no local media in some areas.

Of the ten media outlets that once existed in Parwan province, there are now three, and now only 18 in the western city of Herat and its environs, which had 51 media outlets. According to the RSF, 61 per cent of the establishments were closed down.
