Morocco can play an important role in Europe’s energy transition (European institute)

In a study on “renewable energies and electricity interconnection megaprojects in North Africa”, carried out with the support of the European Union, the think tank notes that throughout the region, Morocco has particularly succeeded in developing a strong green energy ecosystem, integrating renewable energy production, green ammonia and soon the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles.

“Projects like the Noor solar power plants play a central role in this ecosystem,” says the Institute, noting that Morocco’s future exports of renewable energy, in particular green hydrogen and green ammonia, should play a role. important in the energy transition of current and future Europe.

While North African governments struggle to “cultivate relationships with private investors (in renewable energies, editor’s note) and create a favorable legal and regulatory framework, the Kingdom is reaping successes, observe the authors of the study.

According to them, Morocco’s success can be attributed to “its ability to align renewable energy projects with the needs of local industry and the demands of the international market, thus creating a green energy ecosystem.”

Morocco also serves as an exception in North Africa, a region which suffers from a shortage of renewable energy infrastructure, notes the think tank, recalling that in 2022, the Kingdom was classified by the prestigious firm EY (Ernst & Young) as the most attractive market for investment in the renewable energy sector.

Having anchored renewable energy production in the agri-food and fertilizer sectors, Morocco now plans to use renewable energy in industrial manufacturing and mining, with a focus on the production of electric vehicles and metals for the batteries, we continue.

According to the European Institute of the Mediterranean, the participation of the private sector is also an “essential” factor in the equation of Morocco’s success, which masters “the culture and careful management” of private investment.

“Morocco has demonstrated solid success in this regard and therefore serves as a model,” we assure.
