Former Brazilian motorsport driver Gil de Ferran died this Friday after suffering a heart attack while driving a vehicle on a private circuit with his son, as confirmed by the Brazilian Motorsport Confederation in a statement.

De Ferran, who worked for the McLaren team as one of its directors, suffered a heart attack at a private motorsport club in Opa-locka, Florida, according to the CBA. Although he was “immediately transferred to a local hospital, he did not survive.”

“On behalf of myself and the entire CBA family, we pray to God to welcome our brother in all glory and support his family, friends and millions of fans around the world,” said CBA President Giovanni Guerra , it’s a statement.

The Brazilian is a motorsports legend. His greatest success came in 2003 at win the Indianapolis 500 driving for Roger Penske and beating Helio Castroneves, his teammate, to the finish line.

His name is synonymous with speed. So much so that he holds the speed record on a closed circuit with 386km/h at the California Speedway in October 2000.
