Motorola smartphones may face a big blow, because the sale of Motorola smartphones may stop in many countries including America. If this happens, the company may face massive losses. Let us tell you that the US International Trade Commission i.e. ITC has accepted that Lenovo’s Motorola Mobility has infringed Ericsson’s 5G wireless technology patent. This decision of ITC can be a big setback for Motorola, because after this decision, Sweden based Ericsson company can ban the sale of Motorola smartphones in America. Although this is an early victory. Because the final decision is pending in this matter. If this decision is ruled against Motorola, there could be a ban on the import of Motorola smartphones in the US.
Allegation of violation of patent rules
In fact, an ITC judge determined that Motorola smartphones infringed Ericsson’s patent rights, escalating an international patent licensing dispute between the two companies. The full decision in this matter will be given in April. However, last month another ITC judge ruled in Lenovo’s favor in a related case. Earlier, Ericsson had complained to the Washington-based ITC that the wireless communication provided in Motorola’s smartphones Moto G series, Moto Razr, infringed Ericsson’s 5G wireless communication technology patent. But Lenovo has rejected all these claims. Both the companies are embroiled in patent disputes in South America, UK and North Carolina.
US is a big market for Motorola
Talking about South America, Ericsson has won a preliminary court order in Brazil and Colombia to ban Lenovo smartphone sales on patent infringement charges. In October, a US appeals court had blocked the implementation of South American sales restrictions. According to a November report by Countpoint, Lenovo-owned Motorola had captured about 14 percent of the smartphone market in the US in the third quarter of 2024. There was a growth of 21 percent year on year, which shows the strong sales of Motorola. In such a situation, if Motorola smartphones are banned, the company may suffer huge losses.
