Mullaperiyar: Mullaperiyar water level rises to 146 feet; Tamil Nadu to raise it to 152 feet

Idukki: The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam has risen to 142 feet. The spillway shutters were closed due to the rising water level. Two more shutters of the dam were opened at nine o’clock at night. Currently four shutters are open. The openings are 30 cm apart. It releases 1600 cubic feet of water per second.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has again announced that the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam will be raised to 152 feet. Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan made the announcement. Raise the water level in compliance with the Supreme Court guidelines. Prior to this, the strengthening work of the dam will be completed. He said he would hold talks with Chief Minister MK Stalin on the issue.

Meanwhile, Kerala has decided to protest against the release of water from the Mullaperiyar Dam without warning. Roshi Augustine, Minister for Water Resources, said the complaint would be lodged with the Central Water Commission and the Mullaperiyar Oversight Committee. Many houses on the banks of the Periyar were flooded when the water receded this morning without proper warning. Kerala could not make proper preparations as the shutters were left open without warning. In this situation, the decision was taken to protest.

Tamil Nadu has released the most water today during this season. Tamil Nadu was able to keep the water level above 142 feet for more than ten hours. The shutters were closed one by one from noon onwards as the flow of water to the dam subsided. Afterwards again four shutters are now open. With the influx of water from the Mullaperiyar, the water level in the Idukki Dam had started rising slowly. The current decision of KSEB is to open the Idukki dam only if the rains continue.
