Mumbai : Passengers are going to get relief soon on Western Railway. The sixth line is likely to be launched by June. Along with this, Western Railways is going to get another AC local by May 15, which will provide some respite from the heat to the passengers. According to a senior official, the 4.5 km long route from Goregaon to Kandivali is almost ready and if some problems of land acquisition are resolved, then the sixth line up to Borivali can be started in November this year. The sixth line from Khar to Goregaon was started in November 2023.

According to Western Railway, the work of a major bridge between Goregaon and Kandivali has been completed. Apart from this, the work of 8 out of 12 minor bridges has been completed and the work of remaining 4 will be completed by next month. With this, about 70% work of signaling and 30% work of overhead wire has been completed. The sixth line of 30 km is being prepared between Borivali and Mumbai Central. To keep local trains separate from mail-express trains, the fifth-sixth line is being prepared.
Very useful AC local
Ten years ago in 2014, 797 people died after falling from a running local train. Services have also increased in the last ten years, there has been a decline in the number of passengers after Covid and there has been some expansion in the railway network. Some effect of this is definitely visible. Seven years ago, the first AC local ran on Western Railway and it started with ten services. From 2014 to 2018, an average of 230 people were dying every year after falling from trains on Western Railways. Leaving aside three years of Covid, the number of people who died after falling from trains on Western Railways declined further in 2022. On Western Railway, 190 people died after falling from the train in the year 2022, and 159 in 2023. If compared with last year before the AC local era, about 70 people’s lives have been saved. The number of AC locals was 79 in 2022, and will reach 96 in 2023. If we compare this one year, then in 2023, compared to 2022, 31 people have lost their lives on Western Railways.
AC local is the future of Mumbai!
These premium services of local trains in Mumbai on Western Railway are also getting passengers and the number is also increasing. At present, 96 AC locals are running daily on Western Railway and 66 on Central Railway. By December this year (2024), Western Railways is going to get a total of 4. With the help of these rakes, about 40 more services can run on Western Railway. If 25% of these services are also included in peak hours, the number of people falling from trains can further reduce. However, one aspect of this is related to people’s lives and the other aspect is also the fare of AC local, which is proving to be a bit expensive for those taking the world’s cheapest public transport service for almost a hundred years. Due to this protest, there is still hesitation regarding AC local services on Central Railway.
