Musk formally endorsed Trump‘s candidacy in July after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a political rally in Pennsylvania.
While individual campaign contributions in the US are limited to $3,300 (€3,026) per person, loopholes in the campaign finance system allow big donors to contribute to funds known as political action committees that support candidates.
Musk also donates large sums of money to the organization “America PAC“, which was created to support the Trump campaign. The organization mainly engages in campaigning in so-called swing states.
America PAC has drawn mixed reviews for a campaign that aims to give $1 million each day to a swing state registered voter who signs a petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms. The US Department of Justice has warned Musk that this campaign is likely to violate election law.
US election law prohibits paying citizens to vote or register to vote. Musk, on the other hand, claims that the purpose of the campaign is to draw more attention to the petition and therefore it is legal.
