National coach with his own favorite
World footballer election: Nagelsmann voted for DFB star

Vinícius Júnior is the 2024 world footballer. If national coach Julian Nagelsmann had had his way, a German national player would have prevailed – the 37-year-old voted for a star from the Bundesliga.
If national coach Julian Nagelsmann had his way, Leverkusen’s star player Florian Wirtz would have been named a world footballer. In his vote, the coach put Wirtz in first place ahead of Spanish European champion Rodri and Rio world champion Toni Kroos, who retired in the summer. For DFB captain Joshua Kimmich, Rodri came in first place, followed by Kroos and Wirtz. However, the actual winner Vinícius Júnior (read more about this here) was not taken into account by either of them.
The world footballer is chosen by national coaches, national team captains, journalists and fans worldwide. Austria’s national coach Ralf Rangnick voted for Rodri, Erling Haaland and Wirtz. For Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco, Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal took the top three places ahead of Wirtz and Haaland. However, Thomas Tuchel was not allowed to vote yet as he does not take up his England job until the new year.
