The Social Christian assemblyman, Carlos Vera, moved the censure and dismissal of Fausto Murillo and the censure for the former spokesman of the Judiciary, Juan José Morillo.

In the National Assembly, the impeachment trial against the member of the Judiciary Council (CJ), Fausto Murillo, and the former member of this body, Juan José Morillo, began this February 28.

The process began with reading the report issued by the Oversight Commission which, by majority, suggested to the Plenary the censure and dismissal of Murillo and the censure of Morillo. The latter has no longer held the position since September 2023.

The secretary of the Assembly began reading the document after 9:00 a.m. this Wednesday and it took him just over four hours. This caused several legislators to abandon their seats, without listening to the arguments that were included in the report.

Upon his arrival, Murillo said that there are no grounds for him to be accused of non-compliance with his duties. He confirmed that he is a victim of persecution and said that if he is removed, his replacement will be Elcy Celi, whom he identified as close to the Social Christian Party (PSC). He related the impeachment trial to the interests of actors interested in controlling the Judicial Council due to its proximity to the election of judges of the National Court of Justice.

“The interests of the narcopolitical mafia intend to infiltrate the Judiciary Council,” said Murillo.

For his part, the interpelling legislator, Carlos Vera, of the PSC, defended the prosecution evidence and the accusations he presented against Murillo and Morillo. “The evidence is effective, real and compelling and we will reproduce it again so that all of Ecuador knows about it.”

At least 92 votes are needed to approve censure and dismissal, but the session began with uncertainty about the support that the PSC and the Citizen Revolution would have to achieve it.

At the end of reading the report, the president in charge of the Legislature, Viviana Veloz, asked the secretary to confirm the quorum: 76 assembly members were present, so the session continued with the questioning of Carlos Vera.

The Christian Social legislator took the two hours granted to him by the Law of the Legislative Function to support the accusation against Morillo and Murillo. He assured that his political party does not persecute anyone and ended up moving the censure of the former and the censure and dismissal of the latter.

Fausto Murillo took the floor and the first thing he did was talk about his resume and the merits that he claims to have and for which he became a member of the Judiciary. He said that he would have liked to have the resume of the former assemblyman, Luis Almeida (original proponent of the trial), and all of his proceedings before the justice system.

He denied that he had assumed functions when he assumed the presidency of the Judiciary Council, after the resignation of María del Carmen Maldonado, with the vote of the full body of the body. According to the regulations, those questioned have three hours to exercise their defense. Juan José Morillo seemed not to be present at the Assembly; However, he arrived to defend him and, like Murillo, he questioned the evidence with which he was brought to this impeachment trial.
