Nathaniel Copsey has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria, succeeding Rob Dixon, who will be moving to another position in the diplomatic service. He will take office in August 2024.

Copsey previously worked in the UK Foreign Secretary’s office as Chief Speechwriter, covering the full range of UK foreign policy issues. Most of his career has focused on Europe, particularly the European Union and Eastern Europe.

In 2015 he joined the UK government to work on EU affairs, including the renegotiation in 2015 and the referendum in 2016. He subsequently worked on Brexit, and after the full-scale invasion of Russia in 2022 began to works on issues related to Ukraine.

Before joining the Diplomatic Service, Nathaniel Copsey was an academic, later a professor of politics.

He speaks Bulgarian, and his family will join him in Sofia.

From education to defence, from technology to trade, we work in closer cooperation than ever, demonstrated by Lord Cameron’s visit last month. My main aim will be to further strengthen our vital strategic partnership. Bulgaria is an extraordinary country with a glorious past and a great future. My family is looking forward to moving later this year and to find many new friends”, said Nathaniel Copsey, quoted by BNT.
