Children’s Nebraska Launches Thorough Behavioral Health Center to Address Pediatric Mental Health Crisis

Omaha, Nebraska – Children’s Nebraska opened a new Behavioral Health and Wellness Center on January 7, offering a full continuum of care designed to meet the diverse needs of families facing mental health challenges. The center represents a significant investment in pediatric behavioral health and aims to reshape how young people access critical services in the region.

“We’re in one of the most meaningful transformations of behavioral health in the history of our institution,in terms of being able to expand the services into a full continuum of care and meet families and kids where they are and serve all behavioral health crises,” a senior official stated.

Addressing a Critical Gap in Care

The new facility consolidates a range of services – including crisis care, partial hospitalization, primary care, inpatient, and outpatient programs – under one roof. This strategic consolidation is intended to reduce reliance on often-overburdened emergency departments and foster a more integrated, system-level approach to pediatric mental healthcare.

A key principle guiding the center’s design is the “No Wrong Door” policy. This approach ensures that families can access help through any entry point within the system, streamlining the process and reducing barriers to care. The center also prioritizes trauma-informed care, recognizing the significant impact of trauma on both children and parents navigating the healthcare system.

A Tiered Approach to Intervention

The center’s model focuses on providing the least restrictive intervention necessary during a crisis. For example, children presenting in urgent care will receive immediate assessment, along wiht coping tools and educational resources for both the child and their family. If further support is required, they can transition to the center’s crisis stabilization unit before returning to the community. For cases where stabilization proves insufficient, the center offers 40 inpatient psychiatric beds.

According to a company release, the team deliberately designed the center to avoid the need for future expansion of inpatient capacity. This was achieved through careful study of best practices in crisis stabilization and the adoption of the “no wrong Door” model, coupled with the addition of dedicated urgent care and crisis stabilization units.

Filling a void in Partial Hospitalization Services

Data analysis revealed a significant unmet need for partial hospitalization programs for children in the state. Previously, families often faced a tough choice between standard outpatient care and utilizing emergency department resources. partial hospitalization offers a middle ground, providing a more intensive level of support than traditional outpatient therapy, but without the need for full inpatient admission. The center now offers specialized partial hospitalization tracks for both eating disorders and mental health and substance use disorder.

All programs where intentionally developed in tandem to ensure a seamless and coordinated patient experience.

Workforce Stability and Key Performance Indicators

Despite ongoing staffing challenges within the behavioral health field, the system has successfully maintained a fully staffed center for several months. This success is attributed to a strong emphasis on workforce support and the cultivation of a positive organizational culture.

The center’s success will be measured by two key metrics: a reduction in emergency department utilization for behavioral health crises and improved family engagement throughout the care process.

“We do look at high utilization of crisis service emergency departments and recognize that we want crisis services to be available whenever kids need them,” a senior official stated. “What we’re looking for, though, is if kids are using those services because there aren’t any of the services they need.”

The opening of the Children’s Nebraska Behavioral Health and Wellness Center marks a pivotal moment in the region’s commitment to providing accessible, comprehensive, and compassionate care for children and families struggling with mental health challenges.
