Neurology Experts Challenge Knowledge with New Brain Games Quiz on Parkinson’s Disease Treatment
Table of Contents
NeurologyLive® has launched a weekly quiz series, “Brain Games,” designed to test the knowledge of medical professionals and enthusiasts on a range of neurological topics. This week’s installment focuses on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease (PD), a rapidly evolving area of neurological care.
The weekly quiz, which goes live every Sunday morning, is crafted by physicians, clinicians, and experts dedicated to neurological care and advocacy. Participants are challenged with three questions covering areas including dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, seizure disorders, headache, migraine, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, sleep disorders, and stroke.
Assessing DBS Efficacy and Patient Selection
The current quiz delves into the complexities of DBS, specifically subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS in Parkinson’s disease. One question asks participants to identify the preoperative factor that most accurately predicts the degree of motor improvement following STN DBS. Another explores contraindications for DBS referral in PD patients.
A case study presented within the quiz focuses on a 61-year-old patient with idiopathic PD experiencing significant “OFF” time despite levodopa treatment, coupled with troublesome dyskinesias. The quiz challenges participants to determine which comparative target effects should be discussed during shared decision-making with this patient. This highlights the importance of individualized treatment plans and informed consent.
