In a new action, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) requested that Alexander Segovia, who was technical secretary of the presidency during the administration of Mauricio Funes (2009-2014), be criminally prosecuted for the crimes of money and asset laundering. , as well as for illicit enrichment.

According to the FGR, Segovia would have irregularly handled $3,504,235.27, coming from the reserved expenses of the Presidency during Funes’ mandate. The former official benefited from these funds without being able to justify their legal origin. The request was presented before the Second Court of Peace of San Salvador.

This is not the first case in which Segovia faces legal problems. Currently, he, his ex-wife and his daughter are already facing civil proceedings for illicit enrichment before the First Civil Chamber, for an amount of $279,555.80, detected after 19 irregularities in their assets.

President Nayib Bukele has repeatedly indicated that the fight against corruption is one of the great commitments of his administration. “We are not going to allow those responsible for looting the Salvadoran people to continue evading justice,” he declared in one of his recent interventions.

Since the beginning of his mandate in 2019, authorities have reopened several cases involving former officials from previous governments, particularly FMLN administrations. Among them, the judicial proceedings against former President Mauricio Funes stand out, who faces multiple accusations of corruption, including the diversion of more than $351 million of public funds.

The current government has implemented strong transparency measures, in addition to supporting the independent actions of the institutions in charge of investigating and prosecuting those who abused their power to enrich themselves at the expense of the public treasury.

These efforts are part of a larger project to restore citizen confidence in State institutions and guarantee that crimes committed by past administrations do not go unpunished. The fight against corruption, along with security policies, have been the most prominent axes of the Bukele administration, who has received popular support for his firm stance against the impunity of previous governments.
