Several users on social networks reported a fire in the industrial zone of Matanzas after 7:00 a.m., information confirmed by the local press and that once again put the people of Matanzas on edge.

Preliminary information indicates that the flames originated from the pier but, fortunately, the fire could be quickly extinguished by specialized forces that contained its expansion.

The images on social networks showed a column of smoke rising from the Yumurina facilities, but due to the lack of data, the magnitude of the incident was unknown, as well as its causes.

The news spread quickly on social networks and caused concern as users recalled the sad events of last year, which mourned all of Cuba and which became the worst fire of its kind in the country’s history.

According to several sources, it was a fire in a diesel pump on the dock and the local press confirmed that the fire was extinguished in a few minutes.

The fire occurs a few months after one year of the massive fire at the Supertanker Base in the same industrial zone, which claimed the lives of more than 15 people and left more than a hundred injured, in addition to multimillion-dollar economic damage.

Unlike this time, when the fire allegedly originated from a piece of equipment, in August 2022 the flames started in one of the huge fuel tanks in the industrial zone due to an electrical discharge.

Currently, the Supertanker Base is working on the construction of new tanks and improvements in their safety, work that should be completed in about four years, according to site managers.
