The government has made full preparations to provide relief to millions of mobile users facing cyber fraud across the country. Steps have been taken to prepare a list of persons who will no longer be eligible for the new SIM card. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has started enforcing strict measures under the new SIM card rules. Recently, a campaign launched by TRAI aims to tackle the problem of fake calls and SMS, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of mobile numbers being banned. The authority is set to take strict measures in this regard. According to reports, people who obtain SIM cards in the name of another person or send fraudulent SMS may face serious problems. Such criminals will be classified as a threat to cyber security.
Some users may be banned from getting SIM
Users may face a ban of up to three years. The SIM cards of blacklisted individuals will be blocked, and they will be banned from getting new connections for six months to three years. Under the new rules, obtaining a SIM card in the name of another person has been considered a crime, and sending fake messages has also been classified as a punishable offence.
Had shared with telecom operators
From 2025, the names of these criminals will be added to the blacklist, which will be shared with all telecom operators, so that SIM cards cannot be issued in their names again. The government has decided to prepare a database of individuals under these cyber security rules. Once the list is ready, notices will be sent to these users, asking them to respond within seven days.
In matters involving public interest, the government has the right to take action without prior notice. As a result, individuals may face the inability to obtain a new SIM card for six months to three years. These cyber security rules were officially announced in November, in which several new provisions have been included to ensure strict action against criminals.
