Marvel Comics is poised to introduce a fresh iteration of Wonder Man, and this time, the character will be Black. The announcement comes on the heels of the premiere of Wonder Man on Disney+, a series that has already garnered positive reviews and renewed interest in both Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley respectively. This shift in representation reflects a broader trend within Marvel of adapting its characters for the screen and, subsequently, mirroring those changes in the comics.
The original Wonder Man, Simon Williams, debuted in the comics in 1964. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Williams initially appeared as a villain, tasked by Baron Zemo with dismantling the Avengers. However, the character evolved over time, becoming a mainstay within the superhero team and even serving as the basis for the Vision’s brain patterns. The Disney+ series reimagines Williams as an actor, a change that has resonated with audiences and seemingly influenced the comic book universe.
A New Wonder Man Emerges
While details surrounding the new Wonder Man remain scarce, Marvel Comics revealed a first seem at the character to attendees of ComicsPRO. The new Wonder Man is not believed to be Simon Williams, but rather a new character gaining the Wonder Man’s powers through exposure to an “Origin Box.” These Origin Boxes were initially introduced through the storyline involving Miles Morales, who retrieved them from the Ultimate Universe. In that reality, The Maker—a version of Reed Richards—had been hoarding these boxes, preventing individuals from gaining superpowers.
The introduction of these Origin Boxes suggests a potential influx of new heroes, and possibly villains, into the Marvel Universe. The new Wonder Man and another character, Hostilicus, are both believed to have acquired their abilities through these mysterious artifacts. The implications of this storyline are significant, potentially reshaping the power dynamics within the 616 universe.
Mirroring the MCU
Marvel Comics has a history of drawing inspiration from its cinematic counterparts. The casting of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams in the Disney+ series has been widely praised, and the decision to introduce a Black Wonder Man in the comics appears to be a direct response to that positive reception. This isn’t the first time Marvel has mirrored a character’s race between the comics and the screen. the introduction of Nick Fury Jr., a Black version of the iconic character, followed a similar pattern. Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was initially based on his lookalike in the alternate reality Ultimates series, before the comic character was fully established.

The creative team behind this new storyline includes Chris Condon and Stefano Caselli, who will be collaborating on the five-issue series, Reborn: Ultimate Impact. The first issue is scheduled for release on May 20th. The series promises to explore the ramifications of Miles Morales’ actions and the emergence of new heroes and villains empowered by the Origin Boxes.
