Football star Neymar’s father said his family will not pay the one million euros needed to free Dani Alves from a Spanish prison, where the former Brazilian defender is awaiting the outcome of an appeal against his rape conviction, BTA reported.

Neymar da Silva Santos said in a statement on behalf of his family that they supported Alves financially during his trial but would not do so again now that the former player was found guilty of raping a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in 2022

“For us, for my family, this matter is over. Period,” said Neymar da Silva Santos.

Alves, 40, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison. He is detained behind bars near Barcelona.

Neymar’s father did not specify how much Alves was given, but added that it was a “different situation” now that the three-judge panel at Barcelona’s provincial court had ruled against Alves.

“With the Spanish court’s decision on his conviction, there is speculation and an attempt to link my name and my son’s name to a matter that is no longer within our reach,” Neymar’s father said in the family’s statement.

He added that he hoped Alves “finds all the answers he is looking for in his own family”.
