Nicholas Hoult and Daisy Edgar-Jones to Star in Hulu’s Dark Comedy ‘Mosquito’
Disney+ is bolstering its UK original content slate with “Mosquito,” a six-episode series set to stream on Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the United States. The project reunites two of the UK’s most celebrated actors, Nicholas Hoult and Daisy Edgar-Jones, with Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara, marking a significant investment in locally-produced programming.
The series, described as a sardonic exploration of a young couple’s relationship, brings together talent previously associated with Hulu’s acclaimed 2020 hits. McNamara created and starred in the comedy-drama “The Great,” which garnered three seasons and multiple award nominations, while Edgar-Jones rose to prominence in the limited series “Normal People.” Both shows resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning Golden Globe acting nominations for Hoult and Edgar-Jones, and a Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy award for McNamara.
“Mosquito” aims to capture the dark, absurdist humor of “The Great” and McNamara’s broader film work, while delving into the complexities of a relationship reminiscent of the dynamic between Marianne and Connell from “Normal People” – a storyline many fans wished to see continued. The series will center on Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Ed (Hoult), a recently married couple whose carefully constructed facades begin to crumble as everyday life exposes their hidden secrets, all triggered by a seemingly insignificant event: an intrusive mosquito.
According to a statement from the series’ writer and executive producer, McNamara, “I’m thrilled and excited to work with and team up two of the best actors around. I can’t wait to go make absurd comedy with them.”
The production will be a collaborative effort between 20th Television, Piggy Ate Roast Beef Productions, and Hustle & Punch. McNamara will executive produce alongside Hoult, Edgar-Jones, Marian Macgowan, Tracy Underwood, and Daniel Pipski. Disney+ commissioned the series through Disney EMEA executive director Lee Mason, with filming slated to begin in 2026.
This greenlight represents the first major UK series commitment since Angela Jain was appointed Head of Content, Disney+ EMEA, in June, signaling a renewed focus on regional storytelling. A senior official at Disney stated that McNamara is “one of the most talented writers working in film and television today, with a legacy of incredible success at Disney.”
McNamara’s recent projects have all been produced under the Disney umbrella, including “The Great” for Hulu and films like “The Favourite,” “Poor Things,” and “Cruella” for Searchlight and Walt Disney Pictures. His collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos on “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” resulted in two writing Oscar nominations and a BAFTA award. “He has an unmatched ability to bring fascinating and complex stories to life weaving sharply written, intricate dialogue with signature dark-humor and complexity,” the official continued. “Partnering with him on Mosquito is an incredible step forward for our local original content and reinforces our ambitions in the UK.”
Disney+’s UK originals are already proving successful, with “Rivals” recently winning the International Emmy for drama series and a second season expected in 2026.
Edgar-Jones is currently attached to several high-profile film projects, including “Sense and Sensibility,” “A Place In Hell” alongside Michelle Williams, and “Here Comes the Flood” with Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson. Hoult, fresh off roles in “Superman” and “Nosferatu,” will next appear in “How To Rob a Bank” opposite Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson, and Zoë Kravitz. McNamara, represented by UTA, Sugar23, HLA Management and Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz, continues to be a key creative force within the Disney ecosystem.
