The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles exchanged insults on Twitter on Tuesday, where they accused each other of being a “ghost.”

“I told you a ghost and you stayed a ghost, but you, instead of scaring, make you laugh. The people know you: you supported the guarimbas (protests), guaidoismo (referring to the anti-Chavista and former president of Parliament Juan Guaidó) and the sanctions” , wrote Maduro on the social network, in response to a publication by Capriles.

The head of state assured that the also ex-governor of the Miranda state (north, near Caracas) intends to “encourage the economic war again”, which the so-called Bolivarian revolution, he added, will not allow.

In the message to which the president responded, Capriles said that the “only ghost” that “Venezuelans know are the promises” that, he assured, the Chavista government “never” fulfilled, which he described as “the worst in history.”

Capriles tells Maduro that he failed

“And, furthermore, you want to finish burying democracy. Acknowledge that you failed and you are going to continue failing. There is no way (of) you to recover the economy and the well-being of the family,” said the opponent, who, in turn, responded thus to some recent statements by Maduro, who assured that the candidates for the primaries seek a “war” and the “economic destruction” of the country.

“They are not going to campaign, that ultra-right that is being summoned to run candidacies, what they want is war and the economic destruction of Venezuela,” the president said during his weekly television program on Monday.

He criticized that the traditional opposition, gathered in the Unitary Platform (PU), is deployed in a political campaign after five years calling for abstention and attacking the transparency of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

A total of 13 politicians will compete in the primaries on October 22, in which the standard-bearer who will compete against Chavismo in the 2024 presidential elections will be defined, including Henrique Capriles and former deputy María Corina Machado -both disqualified from holding public office for opinion of the Office of the Comptroller General – whom the Government has designated as “traitors to the country”.
