The consumer defense association UFC-Que Choisir announced on Wednesday July 12 that it was going to seize the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) concerning the numerous failures linked to the AdBlue pollution control system.

“While failures related to the AdBlue system have been known to manufacturers for a long time, they preferred to close their eyes and continue to sell these defective vehicles”deplores the association.

Used for cars for about ten years, AdBlue is produced from urea. It eliminates a large part of the harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the exhaust gases of diesel-powered cars.

Remains chargeable for more than 91% of consumers

More than 1,700 drivers alerted UFC-Que Choisir after receiving messages like “emission control fault” or “cannot start in XXX km” on the dashboards of their vehicles, forcing them to go to a garage. According to the association, most car brands are concerned, even if the majority of the failures observed come from Peugeot and Citroën vehicles.

The failures reported to UFC-Que Choisir resulted in a remaining charge for more than 91% of consumers, with an average amount close to €1,000. “The repair is not always conclusive”, adds the association. The latter, which has also alerted the European Commission via the European Bureau of Consumers’ Unions (BEUC), wishes “that a Europe-wide survey be launched on the practices of manufacturers around AdBlue”.

In addition, she recommends “to require manufacturers to remedy AdBlue-related failures” and that the latter bear the repair costs, including for drivers who have had a breakdown in the past.
