The Japanese startup Toregem Biopharma has developed an antibody that can regrow an entire tooth with just one injection

Until now, losing a tooth meant having to say goodbye to it forever. The only solutions to “plug the hole” were to get dentures or pay for an expensive dental implant. In 2030, however, things could change with the arrival of a new one anti-copy drug of the Japanese company Toregem Biopharma which promises to regrow teeth. In September the Kyoto University startup will start the first tests on humans.

The medicine attacks the proteins Each-1 which blocks the growth of teeth and according to the researchers, the test phase on animals has shown that a single dose of the antibody stimulates the growth of an entire tooth in a healthy mouse and to promote the formation of teeth in rodents which due to mutations genetics suffer from dental agnesia. In the future, researchers hope to “grow teeth not only in people with congenital pathologies, but also in those who have lost them due to decay or injury.”

On the one hand we are celebrating the upcoming launch of such a revolutionary drug but on the other there are those who have some doubts. Elisa Travagliatidentist from Florence interviewed by FattoQuotidiano.it, says she is “very confident in the results that this experiment will lead to, even if I also have some doubts”.

“It is not yet clear to me the mechanism by which an antibody drug, by deactivating a protein, is able to give birth to a new tooth in the absence of the dental bud”, explains the expert. In fact, it is not excluded that the wrong tooth could grow and if the structure will have the same characteristics and functionality as natural teeth. “I wouldn’t want us to end up with a molar instead of an incisor,” says Travagliati.
