Coimbatore: Sanitation workers are relieved as 100 ‘battery’ vehicles are to be purchased in the first phase to create a trolley-free corporation.

The Coimbatore Corporation has 6,359 sanitation workers with 3,099 permanent and 3,260 temporary employees. They are going door to door in all the 100 wards and sorting garbage into biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage and collecting it in pushcarts.

Councilors lament that sanitation services are suffering due to lack of sanitation workers and equipment. Besides, the garbage collection vehicles are frequently used, causing delays in the work.

In particular, the cleaners continue to wrestle with one or two wheeled trolleys in poor condition. In most of the wards, sanitation workers meet these requirements. Every day, on an average, 1,037 tons of garbage is accumulated in the corporation, the corporation administration is taking various measures to alleviate the suffering of sanitation workers. In that way, trolleys will be put to an end.

In other words, the corporation has decided to purchase 100 ‘battery’ vehicles as a preliminary step for garbage collection in order to create ‘model wards’. This has made the sanitation workers happy. However, it is important to buy quality vehicles to avoid spending thousands on repairs.

Corporation Commissioner Pratap said, “In the first phase, 100 to 150 ‘battery’ vehicles will be purchased and given to sanitation workers. We have banned bullock carts etc. Now, we need to create a trolley-free corporation. In the upcoming council, necessary steps will be taken to ‘order’ 100 vehicles,” he said.
